There were still some students that I didn’t feel as connected like I did with others.
The idea of personalized handshakes that I did last year came to mind.
What I’ve noticed is something special. My kids started creating special handshakes with their peers. Then, they wanted to show me. So, they would practice the handshake with me.
I’d offer, “We should create one of our own if and when you’re ready.”
Something amazing started happening. Each day a new student would start a simple handshake with me. Simple, yet powerful. Now, at the beginning of each class period, we greet each other to some awesome music in the background. It takes 2-3 minutes.
Can I tell you something cool that happened yesterday?
A co-worker and I now have a handshake!
I have to say I feel cool!
Imagine, walking into a room, and feeling seen. That feeling when you are noticed is a great start to a class period.
